Design Principles for a System to Teach Problem Solving by Modelling

چکیده
This paper presents an approach to the design of a learning environment in a mathematical domain (elementary combinatorics) where problem solving is based more on modelling than on deduction or calculation. In this approach, we want to provide the student with a presentation which is close to the natural language formulations that she tends to give spontaneously, while ensuring a rigorous mathematical reasoning. To do so, we have introduced three modelling levels : first a mathematical formalisation of the students’ intuitive process, then a conceptual and computational model allowing mathematical reasoning as well as communication with the student, and finally a presentation consisting in several interfaces, each one grouping problems of some class. These interfaces are viewed as nondeterministic “machines” that the student uses to build a configuration satisfying some

Towards the Theory-Guided Design of Help Systems for Programming and Modelling Tasks
This paper describes an approach to the design of online help for programming tasks and modelling tasks, based on a theoretical framework of problem solving and learning. The framework leads to several design principles which are important to the problem of when and how to supply help information to a learner who is constructing a solution to a given problem. We will describe two example domain...
متن کاملModelling Student Acquisition of Problem-Solving Skills
This paper describes the design of a system that simulates a human student learning to prove tneorems in logic by interacting with a curriculum designed to teach those skills. The paper argues that sequences in this curriculum use instructional strateu, and that the student recognizgs these strategies in driving the learning process.
متن کاملModelling and Solving the Capacitated Location-Routing Problem with Simultaneous Pickup and Delivery Demands
In this work, the capacitated location-routing problem with simultaneous pickup and delivery (CLRP-SPD) is considered. This problem is a more realistic case of the capacitated location-routing problem (CLRP) and belongs to the reverse logistics of the supply chain. The problem has many real-life applications of which some have been addressed in the literature such as management of liquid petrol...
متن کاملTeaching Service Modelling to a Mixed Class: An Integrated Approach
Service modelling has become an increasingly important area in today’s telecommunications and information systems practice. We have adapted a Network Design course in order to teach service modelling to a mixed class of both the telecommunication engineering and information systems backgrounds. An integrated approach engaging mathematics teaching with strategies such as problem-solving, visuali...
متن کاملAn Intelligent Tutoring System for Entity Relationship Modelling
The paper presents KERMIT, a Knowledge-based Entity Relationship Modelling Intelligent Tutor. KERMIT is a problem-solving environment for the university-level students, in which they can practise conceptual database design using the Entity-Relationship data model. KERMIT uses Constraint-Based Modelling (CBM) to model the domain knowledge and generate student models. We have used CBM previous in...
